The short answer to that is no - However the majority of people find the intrusion of their privacy by spyware/Adware unacceptable. 

Tht being said some software will only work if it’s spyware/Adware component is installed on your computer.  For example of this would be with Real Player or Music Match Jukebox:- these media players can monitor the type of music you like and then target adverts to you based on your specific tastes (or close to them).  It's up to you as to whether you want this service or not.
